The Dark Room might be for you.
‘YOU AWAKE TO FIND YOURSELF IN A DARK ROOM!’
‘The Dark Room’ is the world’s only live action video game that is performed in front of a audience. Not quite an Escape Room but the closest you can get to one using a theatre performance.
An interactive comedy show that takes you back to the fun glory days of texted based adventure gaming, (Wait, did I just say glory days?) You, as the audience will choose from 4 options presented to you. Make your way through the dark room while being tormented by your ‘games master’ on every decision you make.
Recently seeing a show of the Dark Room at our local theatre, to be honest, had no idea what to expect. An empty stage in a dark auditorium with a screen and a table with junk on it, how could this fill a 2 hour slot?
But little did we know, you should not insult the table of wonders!
Straight off the bat, the comedy was started by a very loud, flamboyant games master presenting you with choices to get out of this dark room. Humour was witty and harsh, directed at you, your decisions, your profession, your age, what you were wearing, basically if you have been born, you were not safe. The host has been doing this for a long time and so has a comeback for anything you throw at him. If you get offended very easily, maybe this isn’t for you. Heckle at your own risk! This show was for adults, however apparently the host offers children friendly versions too.
One at time or sometimes altogether, you have to choose between the options on the screen and try to out-wit the dark room.
Just like those 1980’s text adventure games, they are impossible to navigate.
However what made those text adventures so memorable is the use of your imagination and that inner monologue you have about the decisions you have made. What makes this experience different is the games master shouting what those inner monologues are at the entire audience.
An interactive experience like no other and would highly recommend this experience to anyone with sense of humour about gamers and people born in the 80’s.
