Escape Rooms are becoming more and more mainstream as evident by the amount of movies taking the name recently.

Since 2017 there have been four movies made that boost the Escape Room name. All of these movies are based on thriller or horror themes, if you are a fan of Escape Rooms you may enjoy these. Here is a non spoiler list of Escape Room titled movies so far.

Escape Room (2019)

Directed by Adam Robitel

Six strangers are called to action via an intriguing cube invitation to win at an Escape Room for a money reward. The characters consist of traditional tropes; the know it all, the enthusiast, the timid one, the one who hates everyone, the comedian, all finding themselves trapped in a deadly game.

The movie starts dramatically, echoing a previous film on our escape room list (Fermat’s Room).  Establishing the last seconds of quick thinking when solving an escape room, it makes this film seem a lot like ‘Saw,’ however the traps/ rooms are not as gruesome – just more intriguing.

The puzzles and rooms are clever and as we discover through the movie, very much intended for these characters. This gives this movie a bit more depth of story than others on this list.

The story throws up suspicion at every encounter, which keeps you guessing at who might be pulling the strings on this eccentric Escape Room. The ending is a little long but opens the doors to a possible sequel. (Made in 2021)

Escape Room (2017)

Directed by Will Wernick

A special box invites six friends to enter a secret Escape Room one evening. All seems fine and logical until a brutal turn makes the timer start to tick down.  It is no longer a game but a race for life. Who will win in the end, the players or the game master?

The rooms seem to know its contestants and their relationships, will they work together or be selfish as the puzzles get more intense. The Escape Room puzzles are clever and some resemble puzzles found in real rooms. (Except the fatal ones of course.) However some events are a little far-fetched but add to push the story and the fun of a thriller movie. Who is behind the curtain of this intellectual SAW type Escape Room?

Escape Room (2017)

Directed by Peter Dukes

“Four friends who partake in a popular Los Angeles escape room and find themselves stuck with a demonically possessed killer. The friends have less than an hour to solve the puzzles needed to escape the room alive.”

When building an Escape Room some owners may make their props, some owners buy the props, just a piece of advice; don’t purchase a possessed box from a second hand shop. It will lead to bad things happening. The shop lady said not to take it, but - well, left it out in plain view and a story has to come from somewhere.  Things start to happen when a demon is let loose while the players are trying to solve the room and don’t know the way out.  Some might wonder why the owner didn’t intervene earlier but he had his ‘reasons.’ Who will survive the Escape Room and the demon?

No Escape Room (2018)

Directed by Alex Merkin

‘When an escape room attraction turns from a fun bonding activity to a dangerous paranormal experience, a father and daughter must flee from an angry spirit.’

A father and daughter decide to join a group of participants in a local Escape Room. The theme is based around the haunting of a house and the strangers must find out the secret of the house, are the haunting real or not? Are these players, real or not?

Some of the puzzles are intriguing and may be found in a real escape room however the paranormal elements you may not. Some of the story is a bit confusing to follow, it may intrigue you to find out what might happen next, or just leave you wondering what just happened. No Escape Room gives no real ending.
